Pop-up De Novo Gallery in DC on August 3rd!

New Union Market District Pop-up De Novo Gallery To Debut Its Inaugural Exhibition, SYNTHETIC DAWN, on August 3, 2019

Artists Alex Ebstein and Esther Ruiz to kick off rotating gallery experience that will run through October

Washington, DC (July 30, 2019) -- De Novo Gallery (1287 4th Street NE) -- a forthcoming pop-up gallery located in the Union Market District -- will present its debut exhibition this summer, “Synthetic Dawn,” featuring the work of artists Alex Ebstein and Esther Ruiz.

The “Synthetic Dawn” installation will run August 3-31, with an opening party kicking off the work on Saturday, August 3 from 7 to 9pm.

Both Ebstein and Ruiz utilize familiar materials to shift the viewer’s relationship with certain objects and contexts.

Ebstein’s work borrows materials used in gym equipment, construction projects and dance and yoga studios (primarily yoga mats) to examine the tropes of self-help, boutique fitness and the white cube art method of art display.

Ruiz draws inspiration from space operas, pseudo-science, pop culture and the sun to create objects made of cement, Plexiglass and more that operate simultaneously as miniature landscapes from a distant future as well as life-size sculptures informed by the family of Minimalism.

“Both of these outstanding artists use an industrial materiality to explore organic, geological and corporeal forms and notions of personal ritual,” says De Novo founder Ryan Dattilo. “Through their own abstract visual languages, Ebstein and Ruiz aestheticize these moments and transform them into inviting, hard-to-locate, objects of desire. We look forward to sharing their work with the community.”

“Synthetic Dawn” is the first of two all-female shows -- including some local artists -- that the gallery will present during the duration of the pop-up, which concludes on Saturday, October 5.

The De Novo Gallery pop-up will be open August 3 through October 5, Wednesday through Saturday, 11am to 5pm and by appointment. For more information, please visit www.denovo-gallery.com and follow on Instagram at @denovogallery.

ABOUT DE NOVO GALLERY

De Novo Gallery founder Ryan Dattilo moved to D.C. two years ago after living in New York City, where he was very involved with the art community. He’s continued his involvement in D.C., recently joining the Washington Projects for the Art's board, serving on the Hamiltonian Gallery External Review Panel and now opening De Novo Gallery. Dattilo aims to encourage all ages to experience the work of local and non-local artists in a welcoming environment. During his time in New York, Dattilo saw how much the art community can benefit the city’s young professionals and hopes to inspire that same engagement in Washington through De Novo Gallery.
